KEY-POINTS SUMMARY

▪ Streptococcus agalactiae is a leading infectious cause of morbidity and mortality among newborns
▪ It is a Gram positive organism, generally beta hemolytic on blood agar

PROBLEM

▪ most cases of early onset gbs disease occur in infants born to women who screened negative
▪ non hemolytic isolates will not be detected on chromogenic plates (see the enclosed sheet)
▪ the sensitivity of chromogenic plate is very low (42%) in comparison with the molecular test (see the enclosed sheet)

PROCEFURE

The procedure is similar to Illumigene Clostridium Difficile and the same devices are needed. For this test it is also necessary 1 vial x test of "Todd-Hewitt CNA"  enrichment broth.
